Your role 

The primary role of the Solutions Engineering organization will be to serve as technical advisor for Digital Realty’ management, sales teams as well as customers to architect creative and complex data center and service delivery solutions. As the Senior Director, Space and Power Solutions Engineering, the role requires a broad range of industry knowledge, including, but not limited to experience building and managing complex data center space and power solutions. The Senior Director, Space and Power Solutions Engineering should be able to articulate solution benefits to both technical & non-technical audiences, as well as provide leadership and mentoring to the Solutions Engineering team as well as other internal / external thought leaders. It will be your mission to lead a growing technical team of Solution Engineers. Though your leadership, you’ll make an impact across multiple functions as you work collaboratively with your peers, act as a product and solutions expert, and as the communications hub between cross-functional internal teams, Sales, and customers. 

What you’ll do 

  • Direct prospect engagements, including supporting building and site tours, sales calls, proposal generation, pricing and contract negotiations.
  • Serve as the “hub” for project communication across key stakeholders.
  • Evaluate customer needs, and then design and present a preliminary solution
  • Assist with customer RFPs
  • Develop cost-engineering and profitability models for large customer opportunities as well as product line expansion
  • Act as an "eyes-on" resource and provide support to remote Design and Construction teams during bid, construction and commissioning processes for complex customer builds
  • Participate in forecasting, pipeline, market analysis and capacity planning
  • Liaise with the professional community, including attending technical forums and presenting papers at industry events.
  • Monitor and evaluate trends in prospect, customer and target tenant base and direct product roadmaps to achieve
  • Quickly and accurately assess current operations, identify opportunities for architectural changes to drive additional business benefit
  • Ability to extract unrealized customer requirements, and service benefits, gaining consensus with data driven positioning
  • Cost estimation, with a focus of helping customers understand return on investment as well as total cost of ownership advantages of solutions proposed and / or products developed
  • Assess performance and service level agreements against business needs and expected results. Build evidence and models to demonstrate expected (desired) results
  • Able to facilitate workshop style sessions with customers to extract important areas of customers current architecture. Can keenly couple key insights to present highly technical concepts and solutions specifics to audiences of varying technical capabilities in a clear, concise and easily understood manner
  • Coach and provide technical leadership to others on network designs, platform sizing, infrastructure system design and the application of new technologies and project management methodologies
  • Professional sales consultation of customer technical requirements to develop viable solutions, resulting in bookings
  • Framework development to ensure solution development lifecycle structured as an integral part of the sales process
  • Road mapping and delivery for product enhancements and expansions. Participation / leadership in the product development process
  • Motivational and inspirational leader, focused on organizational and individual development


What you’ll need

  • 7+ years of technical experience – Hosting/Cloud companies, Cloud/Networking/IT consulting. Client facing operations or technical sales position preferred.
  • 5+ years of solutions selling and technical support experience in the high-tech industry preferably in the network, cloud and/or data center markets.
  • Effective Solutions Sales Capabilities: Demonstrates advanced solution selling abilities and effective, pro-active customer communications including proposal development, delivery, and RFP responses A combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  • Proven technical support for sales and marketing initiatives through participation in proposals, marketing studies, speaking engagements, blogs and other technical writing. 
  • The ability to work directly with customers to understand their needs, then work cross-functionally with multiple internal stakeholders to provide a solution including cabinet configuration, electrical design, cooling strategies and connectivity.
  • Technical savvy and a solid understanding of the following:
    • Networking
    • Electrical provisioning / configuration
    • Mechanical cooling systems
  • Proven project management skills including experience with document management and project tracking.
  • The ability to work well under pressure and take a proactive approach in handling issues, providing solutions and/or acting as a change manager.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field 
  • Proven platform development success, preferably experience working in a data center, Service Provider or Cloud environment. 
  • Established relationships with critical technology providers that can accelerate critical outcomes
  • Access to resources that improve velocity of critical hiring.
  • Advanced technical degrees and or relevant industry certifications
