Operations Systems Engineer

Position Title:  Operations Systems Engineer 

Location: Remote 

Your role

This is a new and unique opportunity to be the subject matter expert for BMS / DCIM / and Alarms across a global operations platform for one of the largest full-solution data center and colocation providers in the world!

You will make a strong impact as you support and drive systems improvement within Global Operations – partnering with IT and other departments – gathering input from Operations leadership and site personnel to frame out solutions and then manage implementation and support. 

Your focus will be to work with Operations Management, Systems Leadership and IT to lead technology improvements in all areas of data center operations, with specific focus on directing improvements and supporting daily management of our Building Management Systems (BMS), Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) systems, Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), and Alarm Management Systems

What you’ll do

Identifying opportunities to improve systems and optimize processes to solve problems.

 

Coordinating solutions with IT, external consultants, vendors and end-users to develop and implement improvements and solutions to drive efficiency and performance reporting.

 

Managing daily system issues and troubleshooting problems when necessary

 

More specifically you will:

  • Manage the day-to-day operational aspects of the company’s BMS, DCIM, and Alarm Monitoring systems – supporting ongoing maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis and post-event customer support

 

  • Drive continual improvements in BMS, DCIM, and EPMS system functionality in coordination with IT and Operations leadership. You will likely represent operations as the customer to any BMS vendor and IT Organization

 

  • Complete site level surveys and reviews of existing BMS infrastructure as it relates to legacy or acquired properties.

 

  • Work with IT to manage revisions, code reviews, testing, and other engineering activities.

 

  • Identify opportunities to drive efficiency and technological improvements to increase productivity, streamline manual processes, reduce costs and increase our competitive advantage.

 

  • Oversee ongoing system administration and maintenance, as necessary, and in coordination with IT.

 

  • Be a point of escalation and provide guidance and direction to the site teams during incidents/events affecting site operation and implement new standards to reduce incidents.

 

  • Coordinate with other managers in the company to identify trends in equipment failures and/or site operational issues.  Coordinate remote and on-site diagnostics and troubleshooting.

 

  • Conduct BMS, CMMS and other system training for site operations teams.

 

  • Advise each level of DLR when highly technical expertise is required. DEG, IT Integration, ETC

 

  • Access building management systems and validate internal BMS concerns and accomplish first level troubleshooting when required

 

  • Evaluate design standards to determine an operations impact

 

  • Review operations to design and construction sign off to advise QC effort to assure the best possible product for operations

 

  • Propose new solution improvements based on the chosen BMS/EPMS software with operations in mind

 

  • Use a drawing platform either Visio or AutoCAD in order to convey design and set standards

 

  • Design improvements in either software or hardware to move DLR to a best in class customer and user experience.

 

  • Consistently review BMS alarms seen in the DCIM and any Enterprise BMS solutions for trends and enterprise event monitoring.

 

Day to Day

  • Review and process terminations and BMS access requests along with other in scope service tasks

 

  • Manage BMS MSA with multiple vendors from the operations perspective

 

  • Participate in commissioning efforts when possible, to make a better operations hand off from D&C

 

  • Review submittals from chosen BMS vendors to achieve best design for operations

 

  • Approve or reject BMS service work on DLR sites in operations through Work Order Management System

 

  • Interface with local operations personnel to understand the day to day needs of the operator in order to bring that message back to design and construction

 

  • For major BMS problems or effort this individual will be required to travel to site and continue onsite until no longer needed on project

 

  • Interface with vendor’s line of business for BMS needs from the operations perspective

 

  • Triage and troubleshoot reported systems problems, interface with BMS OEM’s for local dispatch if needed

 

  • Review and attached OEM service report visits to work order and following up with the OEM if any questions are left unanswered

 

  • Mentor teammates and Systems Super Users within DLR

 

What you’ll need

To be a good fit for the Operations Systems Support Engineer opportunity, you should possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or other related field

 

  • 5+ Years of experience and a track record partnering with multiple organizations & vendors to deliver integrate and manage quality BMS, DCIM, EPMS and other operational systems within a data center or mission critical environment

 

  • Proven knowledge of building environmental controls and alarm systems, including familiarity with BMS system from Schneider Electric, Automated Logic, Tridium, Siemens or Honeywell

 

  • Proven knowledge in Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) systems and principles as well as Energy Management systems

 

  • Proven knowledge in data aggregation and communication protocols such as Modbus, BACnet, SNMP, and Web Services

 

  • Proven ability to drive internal support teams, troubleshooting and routine training & system orientations across all systems supporting daily operations.

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge in design and operation of critical MEP infrastructure, including multiple types of Uninterruptible Power Systems, Emergency Power Systems, water-cooled and air-cooled air conditioning systems, and critical data center electrical and mechanical distribution systems.

 

  • Demonstrated understanding of various redundancy configurations of critical infrastructure and their associated limitations.

 

  • Demonstrated experience in the operations, maintenance, engineering, construction, and delivery of mission critical facilities including the commissioning process.

 

  • Ability to analyze and assess problems affecting critical operation of facilities, and propose solutions, at times with limited information.

 

  • Ability to analyze cyber security threats and determine their possible impact on the company’s installed systems

 

  • Ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret complex project documents and to manage multiple projects simultaneously

 

  • IT platform and network knowledge with the ability to communicate effectively with IT professionals and system programmers about technical issues to resolve problems and drive improvements

 

  • Proficiency with MS Office applications as well as Project and Visio or similar products such as Smartsheet or AutoCAD.

 

  • The ability to interpret blueprints and schematics as required

 

  • Proven experience troubleshooting script and function block BMS code (ability to create elegant code from scratch preferred).

 

  • Proven experience creating and altering BMS graphics in any of the BMS systems listed above.

  • Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities – working independently when necessary to deliver results.

 

  • You also will need to be willing and able to travel, although, we don't anticipate you will travel more than 30 – 40% of the time.
