Position Title: Construction Accountant

Location: Dallas, TX (Hybrid)


Your role

This role will give you the opportunity to enhance your skill set by incorporating high level of technological skills in an entirely paperless environment and be given the opportunity to find new or more creative and resourceful ways to accomplish the department's objectives. As a Construction Accountant, you will partner with construction management personnel to ensure the financial success of projects around the globe, apply principles of accounting to record and analyze financial information and prepare financial reports, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of a global organization. 


What you’ll need

To be a good fit for the opportunity of Construction Accountant, you will have:

  • Four-year accounting degree and a minimum of 1 year accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of construction cost accounting and general accounting principles. Ability to analyze and interpret accounting data and perform quantitative analyses. 
  • Experience participating in monthly accounting close efforts, including preparation of closing entries and reconciliation preparation is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a multi-national corporation is highly desirable.
  • To be comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where deadlines are tight, and priorities evolve.
  • An appetite for learning.
  • Effective communication skills, written and oral.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Yardi experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, accounting and internet software.

Just as important will be the following qualities and characteristics:

  • Ability to read and interpret construction budgets, contracts, lien releases, and other pertinent construction documents.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret relevant financial reports, legal documents, accounting pronouncements, regulations, and corporate policies. 
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries and/or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, members of the business community, peer professionals, and management.
  • Ability to prepare reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and direct and/or contractor employees.


What you’ll do

The Construction Accountant will report to the Manager, Construction Accounting and will be responsible for the following:

  • Partnering with cross-departmental staff in preparing cost capitalization calculations, analyses, journal entries, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Proactively addressing cost and operational related matters with project managers, asset managers, and other internal project stakeholders on a daily basis.
  • Partnering with the Design & Construction group to ensure the financial success of the company’s development projects using the Yardi Job Cost module, including setting up projects (jobs), budgets, contracts, change orders, purchase orders, and processing invoices.
  • Preparing monthly job cost reports and analyses for review with project and asset management personnel.
  • Supporting departmental leadership with the preparation of recurring and ad-hoc cost analyses.
  • Assisting in the implementation, documenting, and ongoing maintenance of the company’s internal controls and systems, including SOX-404. Prepare and gather materials related to construction and cost accounting matters for internal and external auditors.
